A volunteer worker is someone who carries out work in any capacity for the board on an ongoing and regular basis, and the work is an integral part of the school’s operation.
Under the HSWA, a volunteer doesn’t include someone who is:
- participating in a fundraising activity
- assisting with sports or recreation, or
- assisting with activities outside the premises of the school.
The board has the same duty of care to volunteers as it does to any other workers and must ensure they understand any hazards and risks and have the appropriate training or are supervised. While there are some volunteers who are not covered under the HSWA, eg fundraisers, it is good practice for the board to apply the same duty of care as it would for any other workers.
