Holidays and Wage and Time Records

Holidays and leave records

The Holidays Act 2003 contain provisions relating to the observance of certain days as public holidays and to the provision of annual holidays with pay for workers. The provisions of the Act must be complied with by boards when fulfilling their role as employers. 

One of the key requirements is to maintain a record of holidays and leave records for applicable employees (see section 81 of the Act)  –  template holiday and leave record (pdf).

Wage and time records

The Employment Relations Act 2000 requires employers to maintain a wage and time record for all their employees (see section 130 of the Act) –  template wage and time record (pdf).


  1. These records may be written or electronic.
  2. They must be kept for at least six years.
  3. Wage and time records are normally kept by the Ministry of Education’s Payroll on behalf of the board (unless the board uses its own payroll services) but the board needs to make sure that it holds the requisite holiday and leave records itself.
