The relationship between the principal and the board is a critical hub around which effective governance and management of the school revolves. Appraisal provides a formal process for monitoring and supporting the principal’s work and it is intended to benefit both principal and the board. The Ministry of Education, NZSTA and experienced appraisal practitioners, including Associate Professor Eileen Piggot-Irvine, Murray Fletcher and Tim White have, over a year or more of consultation in 2007, developed and agreed on a framework to guide boards in effective practice when managing their responsibility for principal appraisal. Members of this working group intend to use the agreed framework as a guide for their own work in supporting boards and principals. The framework has therefore been prepared Managing Principal Appraisal (pdf format) along with the NZSTA Guidelines Managing Principal Appraisal and Primary Principals Performance Review. Along with the good practice Framework for Managing Principal Appraisal.
