NZEI Te Rui Roa has announced the rejection of the Secretary for Education’s second offer for teachers and principals as part of the negotiations for the Primary Teachers’ and Primary Principals’ Collective Agreements.
Following the rejection of the offer, strikes are a possibility if the dispute can’t be settled.
Whilst this would primarily affect schools covering Years 1-8, some secondary schools (Years 7-13), schools with specialist units and some RTLBs (if under the primary collective) could also be impacted if they have staff covered by either of these agreements.
NZEI Te Rui Roa has signalled strike action in the form of full day regional rolling strikes for the week of 12-16 November 2018. Formal notification of strike action needs to be given three days before the proposed action. That means it may not be confirmed until around 7 November.
Regardless of whether it is three hours or a full day, your school will need to start planning for this, including thinking about whether or not the school will remain open for instruction, open for supervision or closed during the proposed strikes.
NZSTA will continue to represent boards at any further meetings between MoE and NZEI Te Rui Roa in the hope that the matter can be resolved short of striking.
In the first instance, please consult the updated MoE/NZSTA Guidance for Boards on our website which explains what boards need to know and do to manage the strike. If you have further questions, please call us on 0800 782 435 (option #1 or #2) or email email@example.com.
